11 – Wearable Computing, Gene Drive Mosquitos and a brain interface

This week we are not only bringing you our recommended articles of the week. We are also presenting fascinating research projects and start-ups which we came across at the CeBit.

To begin with, we’d like to introduce you to the research project on Wearable Computing. Professor Michael Beigl and his team have developed a wristband for paragliders that gives the pilot information on the vertical speed that vibration patterns.

Professor Beigl talks about the technology and further fields of application in this interview.

For the first time, scientists are planning to release an organism which has been modified by a  “Gene Drive” into the world. The country: Burkina Faso in West Africa. The organism: malaria-transmitting mosquitos. The goal: stopping the malaria-problem.
Thanks to “Gene Drives“, certain properties are inherited by all offsprings, here baby mosquitos, instead by only half of the offsprings, as it would be the case according to the laws of nature. With this Gene Drive, researchers are hoping to reduce the number of born female mosquitos, as only the females are able to bite and transmit malaria.
Thus, for the last six years, scientists in London have been developing the Gene Drive in London, whilst in Burkina Faso, others are working on informing the population on Gene Drives, their meaning and their possible effect. As, finally, it is the population that will have to decide if they are ready for the next step, releasing the modified mosquitos.
